Music
“MUSIC has the POWER of producing a certain effect on the moral character of the SOUL, and if it has the power to do this, it is clear that the YOUNG must be directed to music and must be EDUCATED in it” Aristotle
Music is an important part of every child’s life. It helps them to learn and understand the world around them through sound. It gives them opportunity to express themselves and share ideas creatively and as a tool for learning.
AIMS
Music at Lyon Park Primary aims to give all pupils the necessary skills to explore, perform, create and appraise music through a wide genre, and where possible, in collaboration across the curriculum, including the use of I.C.T. to explore, create, compose and perform music. It aims to help children develop a love and appreciation of music which will be with them throughout their lives.
Lyon Park School has adopted the Challenge Curriculum for foundation subjects to ensure aims of the National Curriculum are met and that there are opportunities for pupils to further develop their skills and understanding. The specialist Music teacher has designed a curriculum with the Challenge Curriculum as the basis that ensures that knowledge and skills are revisited and built upon.
A whole school overview is in place along with a progression map to show what pupils will learn across the year.
Medium term plans show further detail of the activities to be covered in each half term or term project.
IMPLEMENTATION
The majority of music teaching is led by the specialist music co-ordinator across the whole school. Music teaching takes place in the Music Centre, along with extra-curricular activities and peripatetic teaching. This allows pupils to have wider access to a range of music resources built up by the music co-ordinator as well as the opportunity to freely explore sound and movement without affecting other learning environments.
Expressive Arts and Design (Music)
Both aspects of EAD; exploring using media and materials and being imaginative are used to develop children’s creativity in music.
EYFS Children will have opportunities to learn songs and sing, explore the sounds instruments make and create simple rhythms. Nursery children have 20 minute and Reception children have a 30 minute lesson every week.
KS1 pupils have a 55-minute lesson every fortnight and KS2 classes have a 45-minute lesson each week.
Brent Music Services’ Tune In scheme is delivered to Year 3. In the first term, all pupils have a weekly 30 minute violin lesson. Those showing potential, (up to 30 pupils), can go on to receive lessons for the remainder of the academic year.
KS2 pupils can pay for small group instrument lessons on the violin, flute, keyboard and steel pans.
IMPACT
Music at Lyon Park provides students with an opportunity to explore and develop creative and emotional expression, and gain an appreciation and an ownership of their cultural capital.
Students become confident, using their voices and a range of instruments, to perform and compose. Exploration of a diverse range of music, including its compositional techniques, develops an appreciation and understanding of music’s impact and potential for communication and enrichment.
Musical life at Lyon Park has a thriving sense of curiosity and excitement, where students are confident, and eager to share and develop their learning.
